Government-required postponement of British-Irish Airports EXPO 2020

Following the Prime Minister’s 22 September 2020 statement that conferences and exhibitions will not resume on 1 October, and after consultation with the host airports, RABA (the association of 40+ regional airports), the British Aviation Group, and other partners, we regret to announce the required postponement of the 5th British-Irish Airports EXPO, which will now resume in its traditional summertime slot at ExCeL London in 2021. Lord Deben Climate Change Chairman to make “Major Address to UK Aviation Community”

Keynote Speech EXPO Flagship Conference, Concorde Stage, 14.00, 5 October 2020

As John Gummer, Lord Deben was dubbed “the best Environment Secretary we ever had” by Friends of the Earth. Lord Deben also chairs the environmental consultancy, Sancroft International, and recycler Valpak.

The Committee on Climate Change statutorily advises the UK Government on the 2050 Net Zero target. The most recent aviation advice includes:

  • “Aviation should achieve net-zero emissions by 2050”
  • “Airport investments will need to be demonstrated to make economic sense in a net-zero world and the transition towards it”
  • “In the absence of a true zero-carbon plane our scenario reflects a 25% growth in UK aviation demand by 2050, compared to Government projections of 49%”

Followed by a multi-stakeholder UK-industry roundtable:

  • Jonathon Counsell, Group Head of Sustainability, International Airlines Group
  • Matt Gorman, Director of Sustainability, Heathrow Airport
  • Rachel Thompson, Head of Sustainability, Gatwick Airport
  • Capt. David Morgan, Director Flight Operations, easyJet (easyJet low-carbon technology lead)
  • Neil Robinson, Group CSR & Future Airspace Director, Manchester Airports Group
  • Rachael Everard, Head of Sustainability, Rolls-Royce
  • David Lee, Professor of Atmospheric Science, Centre for Aviation, Transport, and the Environment, Manchester Metropolitan University

The EXPO venue, ExCeL, has now been converted into the Nightingale Hospital London where easyJet and Virgin Atlantic cabin crews may soon join healthcare professionals nursing in the UK’s biggest hospital. We look forward to better times when aviation fully resumes, and ExCeL becomes the UK’s premier business meeting point once again.
